Non-ferrous Metal Sorting

Our modern world relies on many metals being mined. With increasing industrial development, especially in the so-called BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), demand for non-ferrous metals and their prices will stay high. Economies of scale are also reaching their limit and few new world-class deposits are being found. In addition, green field projects are becoming increasingly capital intensive.

TOMRA Sorting offers reliable, high capacity non-ferrous metal sorters for rejecting waste - resulting from increasing mine mechanization and development - before it’s transported, milled and processed. Removing contaminants hindering effective flotation (a physical-chemical means of separating particles from the liquid) or leaching, which are costly processes, boosts recovery and therefore revenue.

With relatively little capital investment, our solutions allow feed grades and rates into mills to be increased too, boosting project productivity and profitability.

In addition, our systems enable low-grade materials - such as diluted mining blocks, marginal deposits and waste dumps - to also be upgraded, increasing deposit exploitation and mine longevity. The technology contributes to overall mine sustainability by demanding little or no process water and no process reagents, while consuming negligible energy.

Benefits of sensor-based non-ferrous metal sorting at a glance:

  • Waste rejection for increased productivity: Low-grade material is separated and excluded before sorting. This increases productivity, through enhancing mining rates and recoveries, while significantly reducing operational costs and capital spending.
  • Contaminant removal: Effective removal of contaminants that impair the flotation and leaching processes accelerates recovery and therefore revenue.
